Herman Trunk Foundation

The Herman Trunk Foundation was created in 2009 to advance the recognition and further the distribution of knowledge and exposure in regard to Herman Trunk Jr.

Herman Trunk Jr. (1894-1963) was an American painter active in the modernist movement of the 1920s and 1930s. He exhibited alongside some of the most famous artists of the day, including Charles Demuth, John Marin, Stuart Davis, Joseph Stella, Joseph Pollet, Edward Hopper, Arthur Dove, and many more. Studying with Henry Lee McFee and John French Sloan in the 1920s, Trunk focused on cubism, offering dynamic experimental watercolors of sailboats, the still life, and farm scenes. His work in the 1930s and 1940s moved increasingly towards geometric and architectural themes, and many of his later paintings anticipated the “Pop Art” vogue of the 1960s. At present his contributions to figurative abstract art are being recovered by scholars and critics.
